Vitra’s captivating Akari Light Sculptures represent sculptor Isamu Noguchi’s modernist take on Japanese paper lanterns. The initial luminaires were designed in 1951, when Noguchi was in Gifu, Japan. He was inspired by the traditional lanterns used by local fishermen for night fishing on the Nagara River. Presently, this iconic collection encompasses over a hundred lightweight table, floor, and pendant lights, available in diverse shapes and sizes.
The Akari lights are hand - crafted using bamboo ribbing and translucent washi paper, which is derived from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Isamu Noguchi has likened the light of Akari to sunlight passing through traditional shōji paper doors – these light sculptures emit a warm glow, creating a delightful ambiance. According to Noguchi, "All that you require to start a home are a room, a tatami, and Akari.”
