Japandi Akari-Inspired Floor Lamps: Choose by Height, Not by Number

Short answer: a Japandi floor lamp is defined by height relative to the eye, not by its shade shape. If the shade's widest point lands between 48 and 52 in (122–132 cm), it lights a seated conversation. Between 58 and 64 in (147–162 cm), it reads as a column and lights the room. Under 28 in (71 cm), it is a floor lamp that behaves like a table lamp. Captains Bamboo makes 15 floor lamps across those three bands, from $125 to $1,080, and every measurement below comes from our own bench.

Most buying guides start with the shade. That is backwards. In a Japandi room the lamp is the only object with a light inside it, so its height decides where the light lands — on a face, on a wall, or on the floor. Get the height wrong and no shade shape rescues it.

What actually makes a floor lamp read as Japandi

Three structural things, in order of how much they matter:

  • The shade is the object, not a fitting on a pole. In this family the paper form runs almost the full height — the 14A is 64 in tall with a 13 in shade, so there is no visible neck between base and light.
  • The widest point sits at or near eye level. Standing eye height is roughly 60–64 in; seated is 44–48 in. Put the widest part there and the glow spreads sideways into the room instead of pooling on the ceiling.
  • The footprint is smaller than the shade. Three thin legs under a 16.5 in shade — the 22N and 20N both do this — keeps the floor visually empty, which is the whole point of the style.

The 14A: 13 in across at the widest point, 64 in tall (33 × 162 cm). The shade runs almost the full height — there is no visible neck between base and light.

Choose by height, in three bands

Band What it does Where it belongs Models
23–27 in (58–69 cm) Lights a surface, not a room. Reads as a table lamp that stands on the floor. Beside a low sofa or chair, next to a low shelf 20N · 22N · 9A
48–52 in (122–133 cm) Shade at seated eye level. The classic reading-light position. Next to an armchair, at the end of a sofa 10A (48 in) · 13A (52.4 in)
58–64 in (147–162 cm) A vertical column of light. Lights the wall and the room, not a book. Corners, beside a tall window, in a room with volume 11A (58 in) · 14A (64 in)

A practical test before you buy: sit where you will actually sit, and hold a tape measure at 48 in. If that height lands at your ear, the 10A or 13A is right. If it lands at your chest, you want the 11A or 14A — a lamp that lights the room rather than your book.

The 10A: 21 in across, 48 in tall (53 × 123 cm). Shade at seated eye level, which is why it works beside an armchair and not in a corner.

The number in the name is not the size

Every model here carries a design code from Noguchi's studio, and the codes do not run in size order. The 9A is 27.2 in tall; the 5X is 15 in. The 13A is 52.4 in while the 14A is 64 in — one inch apart in the name, twelve inches apart in reality. We publish all 56 models measured, in inches and centimetres, so you can check before ordering: the full size chart is here.

Three craft levels, and what the price difference buys

The same silhouette is made at three levels. The shape and the measurements do not change; the ribs and the joints do.

Level Frame What you notice Example price
Value Coated wire ribs Clean edge, slightly mechanical at close range 10A from $180
Classic Natural bamboo, concealed joints Warm structure under the paper; the level most people keep 10A $355
Master Hand-tied bamboo Joint shadows disappear; the labour doubles, not the material 10A $530

Four things to check before you order any paper floor lamp

  1. Bulb clearance. The shade must not touch the bulb. Ask for the maximum wattage and the gap in inches — if the listing does not state both, it has not been tested.
  2. Rib count. Fewer ribs means wider gaps, and paper sags between them within months. A 48 in shade with ten ribs will ripple by the second season.
  3. Whether the shade can be replaced. Paper is repairable, not permanent. A maker who cannot supply a replacement shade at the same size is a reseller.
  4. Base footprint versus shade. A 21 in shade on a wide base looks top-heavy from across the room. Check the base diameter, not just the shade.

The 22N: 16.5 in across, 25 in tall (42 × 63 cm). Three thin legs under a wide shade — it lights a corner without filling it.

What this style is not good for

A paper floor lamp is a poor choice for task lighting — you cannot read small print under one, and it will not light a home office desk. It is also wrong for a room with strong side light from a window, where the shade turns into a silhouette and loses its glow. And if you have cats that climb, the paper will lose. We would rather say that here than have you find out in week two.

Where to start

If you already know the height you need, the full floor lamp range is sorted by model. If you are choosing between two sizes, the 56-model chart lists every height in inches and centimetres, and the placement guide covers where a lamp of each height actually works in a living room.
