Who makes this lamp. Every shade is hand-built in our own workshop. Two craft levels available: Classic and Mastercraft. The Mastercraft shades are hand-tied bamboo with hand-laid washi, built to the same standard as the original Akari. We are an independent studio, not affiliated with the Noguchi Museum.
Free worldwide shipping, duties included. Orders leave our workshop within 1–2 business days. Delivery takes 4–12 business days, with tracking emailed as soon as it ships.

Every lamp is made in our own workshop in Sichuan, in small batches — hand-laid washi over split bamboo ribs. Each one is checked for frame fit, shade integrity and socket safety before it ships.

Each lampshade Paper is handcrafted using traditional Japanese washi paper from Mino, Japan—a region world-famous for centuries of master papermaking. Sourced from a historic paper maker crafting since 1956, this is the exact same paper trusted by legendary Noguchi Akari lamp artisans. Its natural off-white tone softens the light into a warm, gentle glow rather than a cold white, bringing quiet wabi-sabi beauty and Japandi style to your home.

Natural bamboo ribs carry a soft luster that grows richer and warmer over time. Perfect for square lampshades, bamboo stays much stiffer and straighter than steel or nylon wire, offering great value for anyone seeking the classic original look. To join the bamboo ribs, we use natural cotton thread binding—a historic method of extending bamboo ribs that became widely recognized through the finished creations of Japan’s historic Ozeki Workshop. The subtle shadows created by these hand-tied joints are a signature mark of traditional craftsmanship, designed for purists strictly seeking original specifications.
Most paper shades look like a bag when they are switched off. This one holds its shape. It sits between a chair and a window in a rented flat — no drilling allowed, so a plug-in lamp was the only option and the cord is the right length for it.
Bought it for a corner that loses daylight after four. It throws a soft circle on the wall and the plant next to it now looks lit rather than decorated. Shade arrived without a single dent, which after that shipping distance I did not expect.
We put it on the floor beside the rug instead of on a table, and it reads like a small floor light. Warm, no glare when you look down into it. Honest note: on a thick pile carpet the three legs want to splay a little, on a hard floor it is steady.
10 in across sounds tiny on paper, but on a sideboard next to a bed it is exactly right — it lights the book, not the whole room. The paper has a fine grain you only notice once it is switched on. Light enough that I carried it round the flat for a week before settling on that spot.
